EMILY: We adopted Emily last summer (August '09) and things have been great. When we originally started to come the shelter to look for an animal, we thought we would try for a dog who wasn't too big and was between 2-5 years old. My 9-year old daughter desperately wanted a dog of her own and we decided adoption was the most responsible way to go. We looked at some little Westies who were adorable, but then saw some sweet, mellow seniors hanging out behind the front desk. One of them was our Emily. We thought it would be nice to take the older dogs for a little walk, and by the time we finished our walk with Emily, she had won our hearts. She was a little slow, a little
overweight and saggy, but that just added to her appeal. We asked about her situation and were under the impression that she was 8 years old and had just been recently released to the shelter because sadly, her owner could no longer adequately care for her. 8-years old was a little older than we bargained for, but we continued to come back and visit her for a week or so and finally decided to go for it. The day we came to pick her up was very exciting. We had her new collar and leash, her new bed and food bowls were all ready at home waiting for her arrival. As we were signing the papers, I noticed that her age was listed at 12 years. I commented on the "mistake" and was told that Emily WAS 12, and that she had been originally adopted from the shelter 8 years ago, when she was 4. I had misunderstood! I couldn't believe it. However, at that point...we were in too deep and couldn't leave her at the shelter. She was so sweet and gentle and we knew that at her age, no dog deserved a good home more than she did. Emily is a loyal, loving, gentle, cherished part of our family. I never considered adopting a senior before, but now will never adopt any other kind of dog. It fills our hearts to know that we can help such a sweet, deserving animal live out her remaining years the way every dog should; in a safe, comfortable home as part of a family that loves it. Please consider adopting a senior. We're so glad we did. The Irvine Family

ROXY: Remember Roxy? I thought you’d like to know how well our sweet girl is doing. We’re so proud. When we adopted her in Dec 07 she could barely get to her feet or walk. Now at 11 ½ she actually runs when she goes to the park and sees her doggie friends. We have discovered she LOVES the snow and little dogs. We love her to death and are so glad she joined our family. She is such an easy girl and fits in perfectly. Thought you’d like to know. Lynne Smith

STELLA: Hello everyone. We just wanted to thank you for all your hard work at the shelter. Stella has lived with us for over a year now and every day we see her becoming more and more secure with herself. She is a true princess. She refuses to relax on the floor. The only things good enough for her are couches and beds (not even the dog bed). She loves the outdoors and gets along with almost all of the neighborhood dogs. She is very active and can sniff a dog toy through the thickest bags. She has 2 doggie degrees. One from Barkbusters and one from Petsmart where she cleaned up on the dog biscuits after competing in some doggie obstacles. Thank you for saving our Stella. She’s made the family compete. Alison Miller

DARWIN:Hello Lucy. Just dropping you a note that Darwin is doing well. He is really a great dog. My daughter is having a wonderful time with him. He appears to be very happy here. He has a gated backyard to romp around in, and we take him on lots of walks. Thanks again. Enjoying the new addition to our family, Miriam and Marisa Nives

ANGEL (AKA: BLAIR):My husband and I adopted Angel in a spur of the moment decision. We were told there was a beautiful husky mix at the shelter. She was the first dog we noticed before we were even told that was her! She was so happy to see us and we adopted her the next day. We learned a lot about our precious Angel as she was very scared when we would put a leash around her neck. Now, 2 years later, Angel is the most kind, gentle dog. We are so blessed to have her in our life. Jennifer Hantzarides

CLEO, NANOOK, AND MAXX:Hello Elmsford family. Our family’s follow-up: Cleo, Nanook, and Maxx are doing well. We have moved to a home with a large yard for our dogs to run. Cleo has accepted Maxx and Nanook as part of her pack, and has become Nanook’s protector. Maxx, who now weighs 90 pounds, is full of energy and stronger than ever. Nanook is no longer reserved. He lets us know when he’s hungry and when he wants attention. Three dogs may seem a lot to many, but to us giving them a loving home is worth it. Thank you. Regards, the Laboy Family

AMOS (aka MATTHEW):We wanted everyone at Elmsford to know how wonderfully well our little Pointer puppy (adopted 12/27) is fitting into his new home, which includes 2 older Dalmatians (also from Elmsford) and a young cat. I don’t think Amos could be much happier, and my wife and I certainly could not. He loves exploring the woods on his property and socializing with other dogs in the park. He’s learning to stay close and to come when called (if convenient). He’s scheduled for an obedience class in March, and we expect he’ll prove to be an outstanding student. Thanks so much for all the years of love and happiness to come. Bill Kurth and Hala Makowska

BONNIE:Hi. We adopted an adorable kitten named Bonnie while visiting the cat show at the Westchester Center in November. My husband and I felt that the name Bonnie suits her so we kept it. We also call her Bonnie Belle, Bonnie Blue, or Baby Cat. She loves her new home. She is a frisky girl who loves to play with cat toys. She is also loving and smart, and likes to cuddle and spend time with her parents. We also have another 8 year old cat named Ivy. Although Ivy basically only likes human people, she has accepted Bonnie’s company. They spend most of their time sitting in sunny spots around the house. Sandy and Barry Goodman

ROONEY (aka BRODY):Lucy. I just wanted to let you know that Rooney, the American Hairless Terrier we adopted is doing great! Our other 2 Hairless Terriers have accepted him. It’s nice to see them all playing together. Thanks for choosing us for his new home. Grace Burton and Family

ROMI (aka ANGEL):Dear Elmsford Animal Shelter, It’s been over 3 years since Romi joined our clan. She had been returned to the shelter 3 times before we met her and, after some initial skittishness, she has settled in quite comfortably to the daily routine. She still LOVES to play catch, and wears out her supply of pink tennis balls and Chuck-its with astonishing regularity. People at the park we go to on weekends are amazed that an 8 year old dog can run and jump and air-spin as well as she can. I’d love to send you an action picture, but the little disposable camera we use doesn’t do her justice. So we’ve included one of her in her usual pre-catch, spring-loaded position. Thank you for taking such good care of her until we could bring her home. Sincerely, Bill and Helen Moss

DRACO:Hi everyone. We got Draco groomed this past weekend. Here’s an after photo. Thank you so much. He’s a wonderful, sweet dog and fits in with our family like a glove. We love him and are so thankful to have him. Debby DiMiceli | |

MUSICAL (aka MAYA):Hi Debra, I just wanted to let you know that Musical is doing great. “Musie” is just about the best dog ever! She learned commands really quickly and can now play in our yard without being on a leash. She spends her day chasing after chipmunks, walking to the bus stop, driving around in the car to various kid activities, and going for runs and hikes in the park. Hands down her favorite thing to do is snuggle with her family. Although the rules are “no dogs on the bed”, you can see from the picture that this is where she’s happiest, especially if she has a couple of kids to lie on top of! She is the most tolerant, loving, sweetest dog we could have hoped for. Thanks for helping our family find Musie. Janet Rosenthal
